Marvel has Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the Avengers, but DC has the Trinity — arguably, the three most important and popular comic book heroes in comic book history.
Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) — who made an appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice join forces with Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to fight cosmic invaders in an action-packed but fluffy movie that tries to shoulder the momentum of this year’s breakout Wonder Woman film.
With Superman dead and the world in turmoil over losing its brightest beacon of hope, fear has risen to new heights. With no protector to keep alien forces at bay, the powerful Mother Boxes awaken and call outside forces to come and claim them.
Hoping to unite the boxes into one construct that will redesign Earth into a fiery landscape more fitting for his kind, the alien Steppenwolf assaults Themyscira and Atlantis and takes the boxes.
The Superman of the New 52 has passed, and the original Superman takes his place in the first issue ongoing issue of the Rebirth relaunch.
During a visit to his alternate-timeline-self’s grave, Clark Kent bids farewell and takes up the mantle of the world’s greatest superhero.
The family has moved from Salinas, California, to a farm in Hamilton County, 300 miles north of Metropolis. Taking a new surname — the Smiths — the former-Kents try to live a life as normal as possible.
Things take a turn after a thunderstorm sends a bolt of lightning which lights the barn on fire.
Jon Kent becomes the lens through which we see the story for issue #1. Before they rebuild the barn, Clark sends his son to fill the corn harvester with gas, but Jon returns from his chores without his cat Goldie. Out in the fields, a hawk captured Goldie in its talons, causing Jon to shoot it down with eyebeams.
The Superman of Earth-Prime is gone, and the world comes to terms with the loss.
In Superman: Rebirth #1, Lana Lang and pre-Flashpoint Superman head to the New 52’s burial site to deal with his death in their own ways.
For Lang, it’s to keep a promise and have Kent’s body taken to Smallville, Kansas, to be interred next to his parents. For the original Superman, death is only another beginning. Having been reborn after being killed by Doomsday, Superman believes the same can happen to this timeline’s Superman — provided there’s a Fortress of Solitude with the proper resurrection tech.
Lang, who somehow gained the knowledge of the Fortress’ whereabouts when Superman died, leads the new (or old) Superman there. While they’re devastated to know that Superman cannot be resurrected, they honor him in their own ways.
Superman: Rebirth #1 seems geared as a primer — a way for new fans to jump in and for old fans to get caught up with the whole Rebirth thing going on. While, at best, it’s a moving tribute on the subject of existence if you can dig deep into it, the issue is rather cut and dry with an anti-climactic plot point that’s meant to establish more of the old continuity going forward.
Batman and Superman go toe to toe in an epic match-up that Marvel wished they had the property rights to.
Superman — the all-American superhero who stands for truth, justice, and the American way. The adopted son from Krypton, raised in Kansas, working under the alias of Clark Kent for the fourth estate. So noble.
And the Bat of Gotham — years removed from his best days. Down a sidekick and more cruel than his butler Alfred could even imagine, the Bat has lost a step because he can only manage to hide awkwardly in corners instead of disappear abruptly in the middle of conversations whenever someone turns their back. When he’s not torturing and branding criminals with a bat symbol that’s a death sentence to those who enter prison, Batman chains cars to his Batmobile and goes cruising.
I’ve wrestled with doing a review all day, and I only now could get myself to do one now that I have finally admitted to myself that Batman v Superman is a flawed movie. A terribly flawed movie.
Breaking the multiverse isn’t a rarity when it comes to DC.
Time and time again, the publisher has gone through great lengths to clean house by eliminating universes or wiping the slate clean by creating a newer concise one. In 2011, DC put the multiverse through the ringer with Flashpoint, and when all was said and done, Superman was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, the Justice League was set in the past, and Wonder Woman was no longer made of clay. The New52 didn’t touch Batman or Green Lantern, but the new universe was a jumping-on point for new readers ready and willing to get onboard for the “beginning.”
