We have a sponsor!

I have to give Current Comics a shout-out for being our very first patron. They went and paid for our Podbean hosting, and for that we are very, very thankful. I mention in the podcast that it feels weird — that’s not a slight, it’s the realization that someone out there really likes us.

So, once again, thanks Current Comics!

Now, onto our tenth episode which was recorded live from the National Steinbeck Center here in Salinas. And yes, you read that right — we were live!

Our private audience contained three friends (guinea pigs) who sat in for a test podcast to help us gear up for a live show we have planned sometime in the future. Stay tuned, and keep listening.

That said, we have a lot of stuff covered in this podcast. Nick hosts a game show, Jesse and Nick talk about The Pirate Movie, and then we dive into a ton of news headlines.

Here are a few of them.

Valiant’s Unity series is ending with a comedy special. Unity ends due to the team disbanding after Valiant’s other series Book of Death, and the comedy issue will feature writers Matt Kindt along with writers from The Late Show With Steven Colbert, The Daily Show, and The Best Show podcast’s co-host Tom Scharpling.

DC bringing us more Harley Quinn with Harley’s Little Black Book, coming in December. The series will have Harley teaming up with other popular DC characters and will be written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner with Conner also producing the interior artwork along with a bevy of guest-artists.

Cassandra Cain returns to the DC continuity in the weekly Batman and Robin Eternal series. Bruce Wayne will not be Batman in the series, but who cares — Cassandra!

Apple showed off its newest toys at its annual conference. Among the new products and refreshes — the redesigned Apple TV. The newest iteration of Apple’s media machine costs twice as much as the previous version, coming in at a price of $149. Why the price hike? The new Apple TV sports an all-new interface with Siri and a remote that doubles as a video game controller and microphone. The device also runs apps — You can even use it to book a place to stay on AirBnB.

Pokemon has gone MOBILE. The augmented reality game will work with a Pokeball-shaped peripheral to “find” Pokemon using directions from your mobile app. The trailer shows people trading and battling Pokemon, and in one instance – a raid brought hundreds of people together to pit their Pokemon against Mewtwo with a 10-minute time limit. After winning the battle, everyone was rewarded with a Mewtwo. The game goes live 2016.

Jessica Jones’ Netflix series gets it release date: November 20th, 2015 with 13 episodes ready for binging. Jones is based on the Alias comic by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos. Jones also stars David Tennant, Rachael Taylor, and Carrie-Anne Moss along with the first screen appearance of Luke Cage played by Mike Colter.

Warner Bros. announced that a new Christopher Nolan movie will be released July 21, 2017. What could it possibly be?

Nickolodeon is working on a movie that will bring some of their most popular but dated franchises to the big screen in a crossover movie similar to Marvel’s Avengers. Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, Angry Beavers, and Rocko’s Modern Life could have some or all of their casts included in this new movie.

Anthony Daniels isn’t a fan of how Disney’s dealing with Star Wars Episode 7, calling the secrecy surrounding the project “beyond ludicrous.” Daniels said, “When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it.” He talked about being admonished by Disney when he tweeted a potential spoiler and was commanded to delete it. Daniels had an opinion on the new movie, “When JJ told me the story of the new one, my eyes sort of glazed over,” and the prequels, “The effects are clever but pointless. The skill is there, but so what? Coldness, that’s the word. Bleakness, even.” Daniels did say some positive things — he’s a fan of Abrams using practical special effects as opposed to computer generated ones.

Harry Potter fans were blown away when JK Rowling said the movies got the pronunciation of the big bad’s name wrong. It’s Voldemort – the T is silent.

Zack Snyder believes Steven Spielberg is right about the superhero genre dying off, but he he thinks Batman and Superman are above all that. Snyder said, “Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. “They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man — not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?”

Episode nine. Can you believe it? The Oh My Geek Podcast is still going strong and getting better with each episode.

This week, we test out some new technology. You’ll notice we have music and sound clips being added live. I think it makes the podcast more dynamic and interesting, and I hope you agree. We also experiment with receiving phone calls. Listen all the way to the end of the podcast to see if we get it working right.

It’s also our very first live show! I know, I know — it’s only one person — but Manuel decided to hang out with us at Current Comics after our fantasy football draft.

And with that, on to the news!

We celebrate Jack Kirby’s birthday. Check out this article about five of Kirby’s classics.

Hulu is going commercial free! Sort of. Some shows will have ads at the beginning and end due to streaming rights, but paying for this upgraded service — it’s $12 — will remove all ads in between.

Michael Fassbender is Callum Lynch in the Assassin’s Creed feature film. Lynch is an original character created specifically for the movie. To be released some time in December, 2016.

Is Idris Elba too street to play James Bond? We don’t think so, but author Anthony Horowitz who wrote the Bond book Trigger Mortis does. I’ve seen Luther, and I think it’s proof positive that Elba could make a great super-spy.

Bourne 5 has its villain – Vincent Cassel will be Jason Bourne’s antagonist which means Matt Damon is returning to the franchise. Cassel played Thomas Leroy, the mentor in Black Swan. The role supposedly was offered to Viggo Mortensen first.

Fox is working on a Mega Man movie! I would be more excited if I hadn’t watched the unwatchable Fantastic Four movie which Fox was also responsible for. Can the studio do the Blue Bomber right, and why can’t Hollywood make a great video game movie?

Marvel Studios went through a huge shakeup, and Kevin Feige is now answering directly to Disney after a big dispute went down over Captain America: Civil War. Marvel Studios CEO Isaac Perlmutter is still in charge of the comics and TV departments, but Feige is now basically the head of the movie division. Supposedly, Perlmutter was the person responsible for the absence of female toys like Black Widow, and Feige’s leadership role may lead to a lot of changes as the MCU goes into Phase 3.

Horror fans have been mourning ever since news broke that Wes Craven passed away at 76 after a battle with brain cancer. The famed director was responsible for the Nightmare on Elm Street series and Scream, a movie which proved that the horror genre still has a lot of life left in it.
